Abstract

Building upon the theory of the coloniality of power (Quijano, 2000) and the concept of “habitus” ((Bourdieu 1972, 1980), this article highlights how the Western hegemony, which still characterizes the global order, appears in social representations as if it were “natural,” that is, obvious and legitimate. Based on empirical data obtained through the “life history” method (Bertaux, 2016), as well as various documentary sources, this text seeks to contribute to decolonial research. It highlights the central role that emancipatory and restorative education should have in promoting a critical and autonomous posture, in order to allow people to inhibit some ancestral habitus that feed an unconscious racism. It is also stressed that, in the interests of the common good and as a healing technique for “colonial wounds” (Mignolo, 2021a), it is necessary to value and reconstitute the knowledge and political organization of the communities that have been dismissed by the coloniality of western power (indigenous of América, Afro-descendant, Roma peoples and others).
