Abstract

This study explored the experience of defibulation with a focus on its bio-psycho-social effects, about which little is known in the scientific literature. Defibulation is a restorative surgical procedure offered to women who have undergone infibulation, a form of female genital mutilation. We analyzed the experiences of a 47-year-old Sudanese woman who underwent infibulation at age 6 and defibulation at age 44. To understand the meaning of these experiences and how they affected her in a psychosocial and sexual way, the participant shared her journey in a semi-structured interview. Using reflexive thematic analysis, six themes were created based on a verbatim transcript of the interview. The themes indicated that both infibulation and defibulation had an overarching impact on several areas of the participant's life. The defibulation itself partially reactivated a trauma linked to the infibulation and brought mixed feelings. Nevertheless, the defibulation was perceived as being the right choice for the participant. This study confirms that this issue appears to be under-recognized in clinical practice and that there is a need to improve general knowledge of FGM/C and to share guidelines.
