Defibulation is a restorative surgical procedure offered to women who have undergone infibulation, a form of female genital mutilation. We analyzed the experiences of a 47-year-old Sudanese woman who underwent infibulation at age 6 and defibulation at age 44. To understand the meaning of these experiences and how they affected her in a psychosocial and sexual way, the participant shared her journey in a semi-structured interview. Using reflexive thematic analysis, six themes were created based on a verbatim transcript of the interview. The themes indicated that both infibulation and defibulation had an overarching impact on several areas of the participant's life. The defibulation itself partially reactivated a trauma linked to the infibulation and brought mixed feelings. Nevertheless, the defibulation was perceived as being the right choice for the participant.
