Abstract

This report assesses the sustainability of the Geneva healthcare system. Renowned for its high cost, longevity outcomes and its commendable health indicators, Switzerland's healthcare system ranks at the top when considering both the quality index and energy footprint, highlighting room for improvement in sustainability. The study delves into the carbon footprint estimation of Geneva’s medical offices, nursing homes, pharmacies, and analysis laboratories, employing GHG protocol - compliant emission factors. The results, showed with and without medicine sales, underscore high emissions from pharmacies, followed by nursing homes. Addressing this, the report proposes direct levers for decarbonisation, encompassing climate-responsible building standards and promoting low-carbon mobility. Additionally, indirect measures are identified as catalytic forces for a more eco-conscious healthcare system. These findings provide actionable insights for policymakers aiming to enhance the sustainability of the Geneva healthcare sector.
