Abstract

This dissertation aims to investigate a potential polarization of childlessness in India, thereby contributing to the understanding of individuals who are on the margins of procreative norms. Through an examination of their life courses and personal narratives, this study provides a glimpse into their unique histories and experiences. Integrating demographic and sociological reflections, as well as considering the socio-historical context, this research offers an interdisciplinary analysis of childlessness in the world’s most populous country. Additionally, a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods is employed to capture the complex realities of these unconventional life patterns, which defy easy categorization or definition.
