In this study, we will attempt to develop strategies to translate culturally entrenched terms and language varieties in Gisèle Pineau’s Un papillon dans la cité. The general trend so far in translation studies has been to standardise non-standard forms of language, particularly dialects, many aspects of which have been thought to be untranslatable. However, the target language can also be modified, using non-standard forms or less common standard forms of language, to reflect the source culture and thus more effectively convey the author’s literary effects to the target audience.
