The general trend so far in translation studies has been to standardise non-standard forms of language, particularly dialects, many aspects of which have been thought to be untranslatable. However, the target language can also be modified, using non-standard forms or less common standard forms of language, to reflect the source culture and thus more effectively convey the author’s literary effects to the target audience.
