Feasibility And Effects Of Attentional Control Training On Anxiety Symptoms Via A Gamified Task

This research aims to evaluate the feasibility of a 6-week cognitive training of attentional control (AC) with a gamified task (Ecorescue). The study investigates the effects of the training on AC and anxiety symptoms, as anxiety would have a negative effect on AC, and an improvement of the latter could have positive effects on anxiety. It also explores the relationship between training expectations and reported intrinsic motivation, as well as reported effort invested in the training and performance gain. The study involved 42 participants aged between 18 and 35, recruited from the University of Geneva and the University of Haifa (Israel), and randomly divided into experimental (n = 29) and waitlist groups (n = 13). The experimental group completed the 15-hour training over a 6-week period, while the waitlist group served as a reference and received the training after this period. Questionnaires and tasks were administered before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the 6-week period. The results show a tendency for AC improvement but no change in anxiety symptoms. Additionally, no significant link was found between expectations and intrinsic motivation, or between reported effort and performance gain. The study is feasible (66% adherence) but will require adjustments to increase adherence for future interventions. Limitations have been highlighted and taken into consideration for the new study that is about to begin.
