Abstract

During the last decade, more and more studies have shown that mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) can have dramatic consequences on the brain when repeated. This phenomenon is common in many contact sports such as American football and hockey. The consequences of these repeated traumas have been associated with the development of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Many aspects of the consequences of these mTBI and related pathologies are still poorly characterized and sometimes misunderstood. The objective of this project is to develop methods to study mTBI in a simplified model of the brain organoid. The shocks are induced with a new type of technology adapted to 3D tissues. This machine uses a micro-valve to deliver a very small amount of liquid in a precise and controlled manner to induce a shock on the “mini brain”. Through this project, a method has been developed for the observation of the consequences of TBI on a 3D tissue with a fluorescence microscope. Brain injuries are a real public health problem and represent a huge proportion of health care costs. Further research would improve the understanding of the health consequences of mTBI and improve the clinical management of patients suffering from this type of trauma.
