Abstract

This research, done on the basis of a mission-report, aims at giving an account of the daily work of interpreters working for the International Committe of the Red Cross (ICRC). Mainly because of the numerous scandals disclosed by the media regarding abductions and murders of interpreters both in Afghanistan and Iraq, the current context is starting to bring to light a profession that is little-known yet demanding, and at times dangerous. The low awareness of this work entails both a kind of depreciation and perception issues. Nevertheless, be they called linguists, interpreters or translators, multilingual communication agents represent a major link in the humanitarian aid chain. They should therefore have access to a minimum of training which would help them to deliver a quality service while providing them with tools in order to make sure that the principles of their work are known and respected. A trained interpreter, recruited not only because he knows languages, is an interpreter who is actually able to facilitate communication and help his recruiting institution to meet its mandate in accordance with the law.
