The present thesis aims at providing an original perspective upon Calvin’s writings, and hence a new manner of interpretation for his ideas, an apophatic one, apt to evince, on the one hand, some similarities between the Reformation theology and patristic literature, and on the other hand, to show unexpected meanings to be found in the Reformer’s ample work. The apophatic and implicitly mystic spirit are to be found in Orthodoxy, as well as in Protestantism. In general, antinomic apophaticism and mysticism are able to show the tight connection between the main theological areas, between incarnation and deification, these two being metaphorically conceived as main elements of the Christian pedagogical and soteriological “mechanism”. In particular, the apophatic reading of Calvin’s texts allows for the better understanding of his theocentrism, the Reformer’s vision on the absolute lack of symmetry between the Uncreated and the created, his conception regarding God’s radical transcendence, sovereignty, justice, omnipotence, omnipresence, wisdom, holiness, love and providence. In addition, this apophatic reading explains why the Reformer was an adept of the divine command theory, clarifies the manner in which the great theologian perceives the dynamic relation between the Creator and the created world, a relation analyzed from an ontological, gnoseological and communicational point of view. The apophatic approach also has the advantage of underlining the fact that Calvin’s extra theology is not a cold logical one, but it proves to be a theology of experience, prayer and faith, mysterious communion, spiritual participation, a theology faithful to the Bible warning against the pernicious character of idolatry. By means of such an approach the thesis aims at shedding light on the transconfessional actuality of the Reformer’s thinking, and provide answers to intensely debated theological issues.
