Abstract

There has always been a need for interpreters in the courts of Hong Kong, where the common law legal system inherited from its past as a British colony continues to be exercised mostly in the English language, while the local population is overwhelmingly Cantonese-speaking. However, it being an international, multicultural city, defendants that speak neither Cantonese nor English often find themselves on trial before a court of law. Their right to understanding the legal proceedings and thus to a fair trial is guaranteed by part-time interpreters, usually working from English into other foreign languages such as Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog, Urdu, Hindi, and many others. This thesis gives an overview of the activities of part-time court interpreters with the English-Spanish language combination in Hong Kong.
