Porphyry-related polymetallic mineralisation in the Morococha district, central Peru: mineralisation styles, timing and fluid evolution

Abstract

Morococha is an economically important Zn-Pb-Ag-Cu mining district that also hosts the giant Toromocho Cu-Mo porphyry deposit. The district lies in the Miocene metallogenic belt that extends along the Western Cordillera of central Peru. At Morococha, a large magmatic-hydrothermal system produced at least 10 barren and mineralised Cu-Mo porphyry stocks of Miocene age that intruded into Triassic volcano-sedimentary (Mitu Group) and Triassic-Jurassic and Cretaceous carbonate rocks (Pucará Group). Polymetallic and barren skarn, massive pyrite bodies, and Cordilleran polymetallic veins and carbonate replacement ore bodies formed during the multi-million year history of magmatic and hydrothermal activity of the system in Mid to Late Miocene times. Good outcrop conditions and superimposition of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location to investigate the ore-forming processes in a complex magmatic-hydrothermal system. In the present study selected mineralisation styles are described in detail, and with application of radioisotopic dating methods, several magmatic-hydrothermal centres with multiple hydrothermal mineralisation events are identified. Based on fluid inclusion analyses, a district-scale fluid evolution model is presented for the mesothermal to epithermal Cordilleran polymetallic ore deposits, suggesting a direct link to porphyry fluids.
