What is the value of erudition today ? Is there still any place for curiosity and creative exploration outside the confines of disciplines ? On the basis of the practices, values, and historical representations of erudition, this article seeks to resituate the latter within the current debate between proponents of specialization and advocates of interdisciplinarity. The interdisciplinarian, the polymath, and the scholar without a discipline [indiscipliné] : all of these profiles certainly seem to be riding high of late. These new humanistic figures are deciphered under the microscope of a practice of erudition that runs counter to disciplinarity.
