Abstract

The chaotic facies of the Point-de-Platé display a hectometric, isolated olistolith and an olistostrome, characterized by a marly or carbonate matrix. Both units contain Cretaceous elements of Helvetic provenance and are very different from the supra-Taveyannaz (Ultrahelvetic) wildflysch to which they were attributed so far. They probably correspond to the resedimentation of Helvetic material in the Taveyannaz Sandstones basin. The study of planctonic foraminifera in thin section reveals the existence, at the base of the isolated olistolith, of Paleocene marly limestones, which have not been reported yet. These limestones, called "couches de la Vouardaz", are lithologically analogous to the "couches de Wang" (Maastrichtian) and also to certain argillaceous limestones of Eocene age. They represent the relics of a Paleocene transgression and cloud correspond to the "Fliegenspitz-Schichten" of eastern Switzerland.
