Abstract

Access to information in local languages and appropriate formats during a crisis is crucial to reduce risks and save lives. Translation could facilitate this access, but it remains undervalued in crisis management. This thesis investigates the status of translation in response plans during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ecuador, focusing on indigenous languages. Our study adopts mixed methods and comprises the analysis of the national response plans using the 4-A framework, a semi-structured interview, and an online survey targeting different actors in the field. The results suggest that translation remains superficial in Ecuador's response plans and is done on an ad hoc basis in the field. In addition, most translators surveyed would be willing to work in crisis situations, although no training is currently offered in this area. Our findings may encourage further research on the subject and improve the inclusion of translation in Ecuadorian response plans.
