Needs and use of CAT tools in Colombia User survey and quality requirements evaluation

Abstract

Adopting CAT tools, especially translation memory systems, is now imperative for most translators to stay competitive and enhance their productivity. While several surveys reveal an adoption rate of around 80% in the European context, studies on the uptake of translation technologies are scarce in other regions of the globe, especially in Latin America. Therefore, we conducted a user survey among translation professionals in Colombia with a focus on sworn translators, aiming to identify their needs and their practices in this area. Then, based on the findings of the survey, we followed the guidelines of the EAGLES 7-step recipe and the ISO/IEC 25000 series of standards to design an evaluation protocol that would help translators select a CAT tool adapted to their needs. Such an instrument would especially be useful for over half of translators in our sample who have not adopted a tool yet.
