The examination of early diagenesis in coastal sediments that have been lithified as beachrock can usefully complement information inferred from notches and bioconstructions for understanding sea-level changes. At Damnoni (southern Crete), notches and Vermetid benches indicate 1.8 m of surface uplift at the coast in the last 2000 years. Beachrock cementation confirms this movement and, moreover, reveals that it was not abrupt, but progressive, operating over at least several centuries.
