The present study aims to shed light on differences in the use of Arabic medical terminology in a select of Arab countries. It analyses pandemic-related terms in official health communication for the purpose to answer the following question: why does medical terminology and specifically terms related to pandemics differ in the specific Arab countries? The present study is relevant in pointing up the lack of a unified terminology in this specific field. Due to the significance of delivering timely and accurate health communication during pandemics to save lives, there is a need to develop unified Arabic terms which facilitate the translation activity in crisis times. The analysis deals with 6 terms taken from official texts delivered by health ministries of 4 Arab countries during two pandemics: Covid-19 and H1N1 in order to verify the reasons behind the choice and use of each term. Our study revealed that for every English medical term, there is 2 or more equivalents in the Arabic language. Within one country, 2 Arabic terms could be used for health communication. A set of recommendations is finally proposed in order to coordinate efforts and create a unified terminology in the medical field.
