The landscape of the commercial translation sector has radically changed in recent years, in part due to an increased use of technology in translation, and more recently by the advent and adoption of neural machine translation. This paper sets out to understand how machine translation might be impacting how the human translator is perceived or represented through a discourse analysis of a dominant industry actor in the translation industry, CSA Research (formerly Common Sense Advisory). The study analyzes company website posts on a range of subjects related to translation, the human translator, and machine translator to ascertain how this influential actor is representing the human and machinic agents in the translation process and if its discourse is foregrounding or backgrounding either agent. The analysis reveals a dominant industry actor focused on technology but also one with a surprising interest in the human translator.
