The present study explores the institutional translation practices of legal documents at the World Trade Organization (WTO), with a specific focus on dispute settlement documentation. The motivation to explore textual production and translation practices in the WTO's Dispute Settlement System (DSS) derives from an interest in the consideration of animal rights and welfare in world trade, to which the DSS has greatly contributed. The objective of this work builds on previous research in Legal Translation Studies (LTS) through the implementation of the Integrative model for describing genre characteristics and translation strategies present in Appellate Body Reports, the most important genre in the DSS. To this end, a ‘textual sample' comprised of the English and Spanish AB reports to disputes DS400 and DS401: EC - Seal Products was selected.
