Abstract

This study is an initial attempt to investigate the relationship between musical training, verbal working memory - as measured by the backward digit span task and structural learning. The paradigm Catch the Sound was developed to measure participants' ability to extract the common structure when exposed to several tasks in the auditory modality. This paradigm consists of four different tasks that originate from the same generative model. 78 participants were recruited and among them, 22 were categorised as musicians. Results do not provide evidence of enhanced structural learning ability in musicians, since there was no difference between groups in the Catch the Sound task, nor do they provide sufficient evidence to support the claim of enhanced verbal working memory in musicians. We also note that verbal working memory is a predictor of structural learning.
