Media representation and acceptance for minority groups have recently become important factors in the American entertainment industry. As content produced in the United States is marketed abroad, however, translators must examine how their work meets the expectations and values of different cultures from around the world. This paper looks at the way American queer language has been translated in the French dub of the Netflix series Queer Eye. In particular, it examines how the translations of American queerspeak represent and encourage acceptance for queer communities. Five categories of queerspeak (queer lexicon, gender-fluid languge, sexualized language, exaggeration, and camp pop culture references) have been used to better analyze the language used and determine the effects of the translation.
