Abstract

This exploratory study's objective is to consider the use of hypernyms in the target speeches in relationship to interpreter's agency. Researches underline the interpreters' agency and challenge the existing “conduit” metaphor. Can the use of hypernyms, or of an interpreting strategy, be considered a trace of interpreter's agency and of their active role? The qualitative analysis is carried out in the context of the EPIC Corpus, a trilingual corpus of 357 European Parliament speeches. The analysis focuses on 8 English source speeches interpreted into Italian. Results seem to indicate that the use of hypernyms makes the target speech less specific compared to the source speech and, depending on the context, the original meaning is preserved or not. This exploratory study seems to suggest that interpreters can influence the target speech, by using a hypernym, and this underlines their agency and suggests that interpreters play an active role in communication.
