Multidimensional scaling of the french WISC-V : clinical and non-clinical children

Abstract

The French WISC-V has a hierarchical structure, with a general intelligence factor and five group factors. This five-factor structure only relies on Confirmatory Factor Analyses. The goal of our study was to use multidimensional scaling (MDS) to explore the structure of the French WISC-V, with a clinical sample (N = 97; mean age = 9.50; SD = 2.64) and a non-clinical sample (N = 113; mean age = 8.21; SD = 1.561). Nonmetric MDS were performed with the 10 primary subtests. Subtests were ordered according to their level of complexity and the processes involved. Both groups partially confirmed the five-factor structure of the WISC-V. However, the Visuospatial and Fluid Reasoning factors seemed to merge into one factor. Moreover, there were differences between both samples. These results fail to support the five-factor structure, and suggest differences in the interpretation of the scores between clinical and non-clinical groups.
