Abstract

The theme of photography as an activity/practice is a key issue for some academic domains, including psychology of work, educational sciences, visual arts, cognitive anthropology and work ergonomics. Although this topic starts gaining an extensive interest in several fields (mainly for art research-subjects) and can be discussed at various levels of interpretation, our focus is linked to work analysis, namely, how our participants (four photographers) mobilize the concept of ‘work' through their artistic photo-projects. Our main interest is to facilitate a deeper understanding of how our subjects perceive their photo evolutionary path and the transformational process in terms of personal-professional development. We will consider this using a qualitative research exploratory approach; by observing and selecting four participants, with whom we will be conducting re-enactment interviews. Each of them has previously selected a sample of representative photos (10-12 frames gathered into 4 individual photo-collages, as photo-traces of their activity) to be discussed during the interview, through a pre-reflexive analyse of their work. The raw data obtained will be further presented and analysed into two phases: firstly, we will proceed four descriptions (revealing significant aspects of each of their professional timeline courses through the selected activity traces); then, the main typicality of participants' experiences will be further analysed (classified and categorized in clusters- those photo-traces that reveal common, meaningful resemblances, aiming to better understand the evolutionary paths and specific patterns of each of our participants. A methodological tool/instrument will be used accordingly for coding, considering the Potentialities, Actualities and Virtualities- as the patterned three components for their photographical activity). Those two phases of analyse will lead us to discussions, developed in accordance and emphasizing our three main (chosen) research-axes.1 The analysis will allow us to (1) draw several interpretation and patterns (related to their evolutionary path and transformational process as photographers), (2) to set out methodological conclusions about the chosen techniques and its related constrains and (3) to foresee and propose potential links with the usage of photography in future programs of trainings, willing to improve practices, fasten processes, facilitate work-task activities or simply for a better/deeper understanding of specific work-places (as a facilitator tool).
