Abstract

A major problem in Chinese vocabulary teaching is how to reflect the lexical internal system, to solve learners' serious shortage of vocabulary and to reduce their lexical errors. Same of the reasons for this passive situation are the lack of morphological knowledge of teachers and learners, the stereotype of vocabulary content in textbooks, the negligence of lexical research and teaching. Among many vocabulary teaching methods, the snowball has become quite popular, both in practical teaching and in the compilation of textbooks in recent years. Following the reappearance and spiral development principles in language acquisition, and taking into consideration that the Chinese high-frequency morphemes are not numerous but very productive, this method aims at increasing significantly learners' vocabulary by teaching a limited number of morphemes. This paper, based on the analysis of the current situation of the snowball in six Chinese textbooks published in France, tries to establish the basic parameters of the method snowball. The author refines the snowball making procedure by integrating the morphological principle of word formation, in order to maximize the role of the snowball method in teaching. The purpose is to make the snowball vocabulary teaching method more scientific and effective, and ultimately realize the goal of rapidly increasing the learners' vocabulary.
