Writing all possible utterances manually faces scalingproblems. This motivates the use of natural language generationtechniques. We present ExpReal, a surface realizer and templatinglanguage that allows authors of interactive narratives to write flex-ible and enriched templates while maintaining control over theiruse. Templates are automatically selected based on author-specifiedconditions relating to the world state (e.g. characters' emotions) orthe current task at hand. ExpReal has been developed to support atleast three languages (English, French and Dutch).
