Diplôme Master Function, Skopos and Norms: A Translation of "Pour un Capitalisme entre adultes consentants" eng 2019 author Rolfe Hudson 816892 director Jemielity David 114653 This project includes a translation of extracts of Michel Santi's 'Pour un Capitalisme entre adultes consentants', with reference to several translation theories and the corpus research conducted. Drawing on Nord's theory of functionalism, Skopos theory and Gideon Toury's postulate on norms, this project was conducted with the aim of producing an instrumental translation as per Nord's theory. The translation attempts to mimic how an expert writer on macroeconomics would naturally express themselves in English so as to achieve an 'illusory naturalness of expression' at all times and therefore an instrumental translation. The translation therefore draws on my own personal corpus research to identify and replicate genre-specific, currently prevailing norms in English, but also to replicate Santi's style where appropriate to the skopos.
