Interpreting in the humanitarian setting entails distinct challenges that affect humanitarian interpreters emotionally and psychologically. In order to examine this impact, a transversal theoretical analysis was conducted using thematic analysis across 53 relevant publications. The findings identify emotional and psychological impact around six central themes: stress and pressure, safety and security, emotional involvement, embeddedness and isolation, traumatisation, and satisfaction and resilience. While these themes vary across contexts and often overlap, the study concludes that humanitarian interpreters frequently face stress, express concerns about their physical and psychological safety and protection during and after their assignments, and engage emotionally with vulnerable populations. Furthermore, they might experience both rootedness in and rejection from their communities, suffer from trauma-related conditions such as vicarious traumatisation, compassion fatigue, and re-traumatisation, yet also derive personal satisfaction and growth from providing assistance.
