Impact of Decision-Making Biases on Career Success

Abstract

Research into the biases that affect our decisions has shown how they can affect business decisions and company success, but to our knowledge the impact on career success has never been investigated. This study tests the relevance of five biases, namely temporal discounting, a status quo bias, loss aversion, risk aversion, and susceptibility to framing, in predicting career success. Biases were assessed on 132 adults from one company and tested for predictive validity over three career success measures, namely seniority, employee potential, and promotions. We found that a status quo bias and a tendency to favor smaller immediate rewards were associated with fewer promotions and lower seniority, respectively.
