Abstract

Cell junctions proteins are essential for the development and the maintenance of epithelial tissues (1). In mammalian cells, there are different classes of junction. Most apically, tight junctions avoid the passage of small molecules and ions between two cells. By sealing adjacent cells, tight junctions form a barrier to fluid providing a sort of impermeability to epithelial tissues (2). Adherens junctions (or Zonula adherens) are protein complexes who connect actin filament from two cells. More basal than the tight junctions, adherens junctions are highly dynamic structures connecting the cytoskeleton of neighbour cells, participating in multiple signalling pathways (3) but also play a role in the permeability to molecules (4) (Fig. 1).
