Following a tradition, the Council of the European Society of Clinical Investigation (ESCI) will award at the next Meeting in Paris (April 27(th) -29(th) 2016) the best basic research article published in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation (EJCI) from November 2014 to October 2015. In the final selection round four outstanding articles were selected on the basis of their scientific impact, quality and novelty [1-4]. Among those finalists, the article by Koudstaal et al. obtained the highest consideration and was elected as the winner of the 2016 ESCI Award for the Best Basic Research Article [1].
