Two sequence detection experiments were conducted us- ing French word and pseudoword carriers with liquid con- sonants. The results did not replicate the original cross- over interaction observed for French. Regression analyses on RTs using phoneme occurrence time (V and C) and syllabic structure (CV vs CVC) showed a contribution of the vowel for both CV and CVC targets and an effect of carrier syllabic structure for CV targets only. The pattern of results does not reflect the use of a perceptual syllabic code. Rather, for both words and pseudowords they result from the combination of two distinct effects, the moment the crucial phonetic information arrives and the quality of the match between target and carrier representations.
