Metal-Centered Photoluminescence as a Tool for Detecting Phase Transitions in EuIII- and TbIII-Containing Metallomesogens

Abstract

We demonstrate that the temperature of the crystalline to liquid crystalline phase transition of lanthanide-containing mesogenic compounds can be determined by monitoring the parameters of the metal-centered luminescence. Both emission intensity and lifetime undergo a S-shaped variation at the transition temperatures, as demonstrated for complexes based on the diaza-18-crown-6 framework.
