State-of-the-art monitoring of home NIV will be discussed first, followed by a focus on patient selection after an episode of acute respiratory failure and on new monitoring tools to adapt NIV settings. As improvements in physiological endpoints are not necessarily associated with improved, health-related, quality of life, ongoing research on NIV and quality of life will be highlighted in the perspective section.
