Abstract

The way in which the book of Esther describes banquet practices demonstrates that, for the circles that composed this literary work, participating to non-Jewish banquets was not considered taboo. However, just as Greeks might have considered their traditional banquets different than the ones of Persian kings, the authors of Esther describe the Jewish meal of Purim as a banquet with characteristics that are largely different from the ones of the royal Persian model.
