Choices of iron and copper: cooperative selection during self-assembly

Abstract

An amicable separation: The reaction between the two aldehydes and amines shown gives initially a dynamic library of 11 imines, which collapses upon the addition of FeII and CuI ions to give only two complexes. The presence of both metals was found to be essential for this selectivity; in particular the thermodynamic stability of the low-spin FeII complex shown was found to play an important role.
