Abstract The readily accessible enantiopure hydrobenzoin forms the backbone of the new bidentate ligand BIPHOP-F that is shown here to provide the chiral environment for a highly enantioselective Fe–Lewis acid catalysed Diels–Alder reaction between α,β-enals and dienes.
