This paper examines the problem of mental causation, and especially the notion of levels of causal explanation. It describes various attempts to solve the problem of the competition between explanatory levels, in particular those using the notion of supervenience, and the model of "program explanation" by Pettit and Jackson. None of them is found satisfactory.
