How are "realia" rendered in "fansubs"? Why many people prefer to watch their favortite TV series with amateur subtitles rather than in their dubbed version? The aim of this paper is to investigate how "fansubbers" face translation problems linked to the issue of culture-specific-references and to identify which translation strategies they prefer. The first two chapters of this work are intended to provide a theoretical frame of reference, while in the third I will discuss the results I have collected from the analysis of a corpus composed of three different set of subtitles. Over the last few years, in Italy, fansubbing has gathered a great number of enthusiasts : many of them claim that fansubs are a good alternative to the dubbed versions of TV series, often perceived as too much target-oriented and as ravaged by censure. It was my intention to verify if their feelings were consistent with empirical findings.
