Abstract The dielectric, pyroelectric, optical, and thermal properties of Mn-Cl, Mn-Br and Mn-I boracites were investigated in the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase (space group Pca21). The peculiar and very different behavior of the dielectric constant, e33, in each compd. is consistent with the predictions of current phenomenologic theories on improper phase transitions.
