Abstract

The surface features of YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) single crystals grown from a BaO/CuO flux at high temperatures were investigated by optical microscopy and SEM. Growth spirals, growth hillocks, and impurity inclusions were observed on the (001) surface. Hopper morphology and surface dendrites were seen on the (100)/(010) surface. Dissolution layers on the (001) surface are described. The difference in the growth mechanisms between the basal {001} and the lateral {100}/{010} faces is discussed.
