Experimental determination of the spin-stress coefficients of Gd3+ in the new host crystal Na2S

Abstract Experimental results are reported on Gd3+ in cubic Na2S single crystals. EPR and ENDOR measurements swhow the center to consist of a Gd3+ ion substituing for a host cation and being associated with two Na+ vacancies. Its local symmetry is D2d. The stress dependence of the EPR spectrum is investigated experimentally. The results are interpreted in terms of the Van Vleck-Orbach spin-stress Hamoltonian. Finally, the essential steps of the procedure to grow Na2S single crystals are briefly described.
