Abstract

This thesis explores the translator's approach to translating intentionally and unintentionally unclear source texts in international organizations. It begins with a discussion of French, Spanish and English style guides, the common association of clarity with so-called "good" writing and how clarity is usually achieved. It then discusses various reasons why the language used in international organizations may be intentionally or unintentionally unclear. Lastly, this thesis addresses the role of hermeneutics and interpretation in the translation on unclear texts and provides piratical guidelines on how produce equally vague target texts.
