Abstract

This thesis examines parietal writing in sixteenth and seventeenth century English culture. Renaissance London was a heavily texted environment, and walls, doors, and doorways were frequent sites of writing. The writing was both sanctioned and unsanctioned, and was inherently mnemonic by being located on a vertical service. This thesis also examines the use of walls in contemporary literature, through the motif of the paraclausithyron.
