Adolescence is a time of opportunity in which individuals acquire new skills and behaviours that will influence their entire life. It is also a period of life in which most of the disease burden is preventable. Providing appropriate care and promoting a healthy lifestyle in adolescence has the potential to modify the current epidemiological trend which places noncommunicable diseases, mental disorders and injuries at the top of the list of disorders affecting the world's population. As most young people are in contact with primary care providers, these are ideally placed to address the current and future burden of disease in this age-group. This thesis presents a framework for providing youth-friendly primary care services and discusses steps taken to develop such services and provide the evidence of their impact on young people's health.
