The Carnian Pluvial Episode (CPE) represents a major Late Triassic climatic perturbation, yet its sedimentary expression varies widely among depositional systems, particularly between the eastern and western Tethyan domains. Here, we present an integrated sedimentological, biostratigraphic (conodonts and foraminifera) and geochemical study of a Carnian marine section from the Huangcao area in the Yanyuan Basin, located on the southwestern margin of the Upper Yangtze Plate. The δ13Corg record shows at least six negative excursions, indicating repeated perturbations of the global carbon cycle. However, these excursions do not correlate well with records from the western and eastern Tethys, suggesting that local sedimentary processes played an important role in shaping the signal. In contrast, δ13Ccarb values remain relatively stable and are only weakly coupled with δ13Corg, likely reflecting overprinting by shallow-water processes or post-depositional alteration. Sedimentologically, the section records a storm-influenced mixed carbonate-siliciclastic ramp, with frequent shifts between inner- and mid-ramp settings. Terrigenous input occurs mainly as dispersed quartz grains rather than thick mudstone layers, indicating a steady but moderate supply. Carbonate-factory evolution generally shows a shift from microbial to skeletal components, followed by a gradual recovery of microbial components in the Late Carnian. However, in the Huangcao section, at least two short-lived recoveries of microbial components can still be recognized during intervals dominated by skeletal components. In summary, the Late Triassic succession in the Yanyuan Basin preserves a record of the CPE, although its sedimentary expression was strongly modulated by regional sedimentary-hydrological modulation.
