A Computational Folkloristics of Internet Memes

Abstract

This paper proposes considering internet memes as a form of digital folklore, the modern equivalent of traditional proverbs, myths, songs, and folktales. It does so not in the abstract, but by mapping a large corpus of entries from the encyclopedia KnowYourMeme.com (KYM) using a classic analytical tool of folk narratology: motif indexing i.e., the decomposition of stories into a large but limited ensemble of narrative atoms that resonate across them. In doing so, we show that internet memes (much like folktales) can and should be classified not only according to their themes or topics, but also according to the narrative structures that underpin them and recur across disparate platforms and subjects.&nbsp; </div> <div> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; To test and operationalize these ideas, we developed a pipeline that leverages large language models (LLMs) to distill narrative motifs from KYM entries on a large scale. The pipeline isolates each meme's diegetic content (the story the meme tells, as opposed to commentaries about it), narrates it as a series of story sequences, abstracts those into narrative motifs in the tradition of Thompson's Motif-Index, and groups equivalent motifs into named tropes. Applied to 8,314 meme biographies, it yields 24,349 canonical story sequences, 18,446 motifs, and 1,081 labelled tropes. We also map them out as a bipartite meme-trope network. Every step in the pipeline is scored by an independent LLM judge. The resulting network is, to our knowledge, the first motif-level narrative map of internet meme culture. The analysis of this network reveals that memetic narratives are organized into a tripartition of fiction, internet culture, and public discourse.
