Abstract

Intrusive memories are a core symptom of post-traumatic stress reactions and can severely affect emotional well-being. This study examined whether memory reactivation combined with a visuospatial interference task (Tetris) could reduce intrusive memory frequency following exposure to a distressing film, grounded in memory reconsolidation theory. A total of 101 participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions defined by the presence or absence of Reactivation and Tetris. Intrusion frequency was measured using an Intrusion Diary, with additional measures including the Intrusion Provocation Task, self-reported distress and wakefulness, and anxiety and depression symptoms (HADS-A, HADS-D). A significant Time × Reactivation interaction indicated a reduction in intrusions specifically in the reactivation condition, while no significant effects of Tetris were observed. Self-reported distress varied meaningfully within sessions in response to specific experimental tasks, while wakefulness remained stable throughout. Anxiety and depression symptoms did not predict post-intervention intrusion outcomes. These findings provide partial support for reconsolidation-based mechanisms, suggesting that reactivation alone may be sufficient to reduce intrusive memories, and highlight the need for larger samples and refined experimental parameters in future research.
